A Brief History of the First Chinese Church of Christ:

Sit Moon

Sit Moon immigrated from China to California where he became a Christian and worked for 15 years in the Presbyterian Mission field of San Francisco. The Rev. A.W. Loomis, who called him the best Chinese Evangelist in the California field, recommended him to the Young Men's Christian Association to become a preacher/colportuer in order to evangelize the Chinese laborers in Hawaii. Hired by the YMCA in 1875, he went on evangelistic tours of the Hawaiian Islands, leading many of his countrymen to Christ. In 1877, Sit Moon founded You Hawk Jihu Taw Hui (the Beginning Evangelical Society of Learners) which became known as the Chinese YMCA and later became the Chinese Christian Association. It was chartered by King Kalakaua on November 13, 1877.

In 1879, became the first pastor of the Chinese Christian Church which would later become the First Chinese Church of Christ in Hawaii.
