A Brief History of the FCCC:

The Founding of the Chinese Christian Church of Honolulu

In 1876, twenty eight Chinese Christians, including five women, who had been converted by the Basel Missionaries in China arrived from South China.

Nineteen of those called on the Rev. Samuel Damon to assist them in their Christian nurture. They would later start a small night school at the Bethel Church.

On June 8, 1879, six professed their faith and 33 transferred memberships from Hong Kong and Canton missions to form the CHINESE CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF HONOLULU. They cited difficulties understanding the English language services as their reason for wanting their own church and asked for a church where services could be in their own language. The Hawaiian Evangelical Association granted their petition.

Sit Moon is called to become their first pastor.

On October 3, King Kalakaua granted a charter to the CHINESE CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF HONOLULU which became popularly known as the FORT STREET CHINESE CHURCH and in Chinese, FO GAI FOOK YIM TONG.
